The Medical Research Council (MRC) has strongly condemned an armed attack on its field station in Keneba, accompanied by robberies at local businesses. The incident, occurring on Friday, has sparked concerns about community safety and the necessity for heightened security measures.
Four armed men reportedly broke into Yonna and Western Union branches in Kiang Keneba, stealing over D180,000. They then targeted the MRC guard room, obtaining keys to an MRC Toyota pickup, loading stolen items, and fleeing.
Umberto DAlessandro, MRC’s Unit Director, denounced the attack, urging security forces to ensure community safety and maintain peace. Despite the setback, the MRC reaffirmed its commitment to research and combat diseases in the region.
Fortunately, no MRC staff or patients were harmed. However, the incident has left the community shaken. The discovery of the MRC pickup in a forest between Bogal and Sare Alkali villages has raised further concerns about area safety.
Authorities have been alerted, and residents are advised to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The swift actions of the armed perpetrators underscore the urgency of bolstering security measures to prevent future attacks. Cooperation with law enforcement is encouraged to forestall further incidents.
