President Barrow Urges Agricultural Revolution for Rice Self-Sufficiency

President Adama Barrow is leading a charge for a transformative shift in rice production, urging the Ministry of Agriculture to spearhead investments in the sector. Barrow highlights a concerning stagnation in rice production compared to other cereals, emphasizing the need to harness the country’s agricultural potential. With a focus on leveraging human capital and technical expertise, the aim is to diminish reliance on rice imports. Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Demba Sabally, unveils plans for importing over 100 tractors to bolster rice cultivation and ensure national food security. The agenda includes mechanization, land development, access to high-yield seeds, agricultural education, and incentivizing youth participation. Notably, ongoing projects like the Roots Project and the Gambia Inclusive and Resilient Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (GIRAV) are pivotal in driving productivity and market access for sustainable food security.
